Ashutosh Rana doesn’t need an introduction. The actor, who has impressed the audience with his power packed performances over the past two decades, is now all set to portray yet another complex character, Peter Fernandes, in the series, ‘Murder In Mahim‘, on Jio Cinema. From discussing the challenges of portraying a journalist for the first time to exploring the themes and societal issues tackled in the series, Rana provides insightful perspectives on his role and the broader narrative of the series. He also shares how enriching it was to work with the stellar cast, how he discusses all his projects with wife Renuka Shahane, praises Vijay Raaz, reacts to Preity Zinta‘s statement on the ‘Sangarsh’ sequel, and much more in these exclusive conversations with ETimes.
What set this role of a journalist apart, and what challenges did you face while working on this project?
Journalism is often regarded as the fourth pillar of our democracy; hence, it carries significant responsibility. Especially for Peter Fernandes, the character in Modern Mahim. One can either be a journalist by profession or by nature. Peter Fernandes embodies the latter. In light of the current state of journalism, he opts for early retirement, believing it’s affecting him psychologically. He decides to spend more time with his family instead. However, certain events compel him to adopt his journalistic approach again, despite no longer being a journalist. Through Peter, we delve into the complexities of life, exploring relationships, societal pressures, and individual identities. The narrative revolves around solving a murder mystery, with Peter, the police, and journalists collaborating. It was an exhilarating and challenging experience. I firmly believe that effective communication between the police and journalists can unravel any mystery. Peter’s character is nuanced and subdued. It’s easy to depict a character’s journey from humble beginnings to power, but portraying strength requires finesse. It’s both interesting and challenging. The series premieres on Jio Cinema on May 10th. We’re eager to see the audience’s response.
There are some heartwarming moments between you and your on-screen son in the trailer. Did you ever find yourself thinking about your real son while filming those scenes?
No, I didn’t. Did you recall him during any conversations? No, I didn’t. I believe each moment has its own truth, independent of one’s personal experiences. Injecting personal experiences into a scene can make it seem contrived and unnatural. As actors, our task is to explore the truth of the moment and portray it authentically.
Did you discuss the project with your wife, Renuka, before accepting a role?
Yes, we did.
What was her reaction this time to your character?
She read the novel on which the series is based and found it exceptionally well-written. Given the character’s nature, she encouraged me to take on the role.
How was your experience working with Vijay Raj and Shivaji Satyam?
The greatest strength of ‘Murder in Mahim’ lies in its stellar cast. All the characters are portrayed by brilliant actors. Vijay Raj, who plays Inspector Jhinde, is exceptional. Shivaji Satyam brings his seasoned expertise to the table. Divya Jagdale, portraying my wife, is a superb theater actress. Our on-screen son, Rohan, is an intelligent actor. Ashutosh, playing the character named Unit, is simply magical. Being surrounded by such talented actors made the experience enriching.
Did you engage in casual conversations with Vijay Raaz on set?
We didn’t engage in casual conversations. We believe we’re paid to work on set. Casual conversations can wait until after pack-up. On set, our focus was solely on our work. I’m a thorough professional; I even refrain from using my phone on set. If necessary, I make calls during lunch breaks. On set, we discussed scenes, exchanged ideas, and explored improvisation.
You and Vijay Raj both played transgender characters in different films. Have you seen his performance in Gangubai Khatiawadi?
Yes, I have. I’ve also portrayed a transgender character in a film called Shabnam Mausi. Vijay Raj’s portrayal in Gangubai is remarkable. He’s an outstanding actor. If you have seen that, that is based on real life character, Shabnam Mausi, who won election, MLA election from Madhya Pradesh, So, I have done that character also, and Vijay Raj was also part of the film and played a important role. He is so effective as an eunuch in Gangubai. Undoubtedly, he is a brilliant actor, and it is a fantastic ride, working with Vijay, and sharing that same frame.
Audiences are eagerly awaiting Sunil Luthra‘s return (his character from War). Can you share any details about it?
I’m eagerly awaiting it too. We’re currently filming, and you can expect to see the film next year.
