German carmaker BMW is gearing up to debut the fourth generation of its 1 Series hatch, marking a significant milestone in the model’s 20-year history. The manufacturer has revealed the new iteration, which is set to debut globally in October 2024. Here, let’s take a quick look at what has been changed.
BMW 1 Series: Design
The new BMW 1 Series now features a refined yet assertive design.It gets a more revamped front fascia, complemented by updated adaptive LED headlights featuring new DRL patterns. The redesigned bumper and fresh alloy wheels enhance its modern look, however, it remains more or less the same in terms of side profile minus these changes. Moving to the rear, it sports updated tail lamps reminiscent of the BMW X2 and a revamped lower bumper with sleek black trim.

The fourth-generation 1 Series has grown slightly in terms of dimensions, now measuring 4,361 mm in length—an increase of 42 mm. Its wheelbase extends to 2,670 mm, while the width remains the same at 1,800 mm. The height has also seen a modest increase, up by 25 mm to 1,459 mm.
BMW Series 1: Features and Safety
The model will now feature a twin-screen setup, combining a 10.25-inch digital driver display and a 10.7-inch infotainment system. This interface has been borrowed from models like the X2.

Speaking of safety, it will boast of standard advanced driver assistance systems, including front collision warning, Lane Departure Warning, and Traffic Sign Recognition. Optional extras such as Steering and Lane Control Assist and Parking Assistant Professional push the envelope further.

BMW Series 1: Powertrain
The fourth-generation 1 Series boasts an upgraded powertrain lineup, incorporating 48-volt mild hybrid technology for improved efficiency. Engine options include a 3-cylinder petrol engine and two 4-cylinder diesel engines, all mated to a 7-speed Steptronic dual-clutch transmission.

At the top of the range is the BMW M135 xDrive. This model boasts a powerful 300 hp, four-cylinder engine, sport steering, and all-wheel drive. It accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in just 4.9 seconds.

While the model will make its debut overseas in the last quarter of 2024, it is highly unlikely that the manufacturer will bring it to India as the previous gen Series 1 was discontinued on our shores back in 2017 due to lackluster sales.
