Evansville baseball outfielder Ty Rumsey had a scary moment during the Knoxville Super Regional on Friday.
The Purple Aces’ center fielder went up to catch a ball off the bat of No. 1 overall seed Tennessee’s Blake Burke. Before he could collect the ball, however, he collided with the right-center field wall; the ball also ricocheted off the wall and hit Rumsey in the face.

Burke picked up the RBI double as Christian Moore came around to score to put the Vols back up 6-5 in the bottom of the fifth inning. Meanwhile, action in the game stopped as trainers came over to check on Rumsey, who appeared to have blood near the side of his eye.
Luckily for the Purple Aces, Rumsey appeared fine and stayed in the game for the bottom of the fifth inning despite the scary collision. However, in the top of the sixth inning, Brodie Peart pinch hit for Rumsey in the nine spot, ending Rumsey’s night. Rumsey entered the Knoxville Super Regional with a .274 batting average with seven home runs, 26 RBI, and 16-for-18 in stolen base attempts.
According to Michael Gross of Eyewitness News of Evansville, Rumsey’s initial diagnosis was a shoulder injury. Gross tweeted out Friday evening that the “initial consensus is not great” on the injury.
