Mulk‘ which starred the late Rishi Kapoor and Taapsee Pannu got a lot of critical acclaim and love from the audience. However, did you know that when the film was being made, it lacked budgets. Director Anubhav Sinha did not have a very high budget for the film as everyone told him nobody wants to see Rishi Kapoor and Taapsee Pannu. So much so, that the director would travel in e-rickshaws as he didn’t have money.
Taapsee revealed that recently in an interview as she recalled memories on the movie.Taapsee revealed during an interaction with Indian express, that Anubhav was told, ‘Who wants to watch Rishi and Taapsee’. The actress further added, “So, he did not get money. He has traveled back and forth to set on an e-rickshaw with everyone, because he just didn’t have the money. And he made sure that at least the actors had cars.”
During those times, Taapsee was ready to take whatever she got for the film as she loved the script. She further added, “At that time, whatever I was charging, I told him ‘Sir, aap jo de rahe ho de do (give whatever you want to) because after reading the script, I don’t even know if I should ask for money to do this and I am too insignificant. Mere haan karne se koi film approve ya reject nahi ho rahi uss time pe, (Because I am not in a position to approve or reject a film) I am not that strong or big a name to get budgets approved anyway, I was very realistic about it… I know honestly ki pata nahi picture release bhi ho payegi ya nahi (if the film will even release or not). We were very aware of that fact. He took everything on him. I don’t know where that man got that kind of courage.”
The actress said that today she would happily produce and act in a film like ‘Mulk’, but only if she has a director like Anubhav Sinha. In the same chat, Taapsee also opened up on the issues she had with ‘Animal’ starring Ranbir Kapoor. She admitted that it was strange for her to see the audience clapping and whistling in some problematic scenes in the movie.
