Shami’s friend Umesh Kumar recalled a shocking incident when the India pacer had contemplated suicide as well.
Delhi: India’s fast bowler Mohammed Shami was the toast of the nation during the 2023 ODI World Cup as he emerged as the leading wicket-taker in the tournament. Shami picked up 24 wickets in seven matches at a surreal average of 10.71. But things were not the same in his life in 2018 when he got himself involved in a match-fixing scandal. It was not just the fixing scandal that was worrying the pacer, but it was the allegations levelled by his wife Hasin Jahan as well. Shami’s friend Umesh Kumar recalled a shocking incident when the India pacer had contemplated suicide as well.
“It also came in the news that he wanted to do something drastic that night (end his life). It was around 4 AM in the morning when I got up to drink water. I was on my way to the kitchen when I saw that he was standing on the balcony. It was the 19th floor we were living in. I understood what happened. That night of Shami’s career, I feel, was the longest,” Umesh told Hindustan Times.
Shami is currently on the road to recovery from his ODI World Cup 2023 injuries. He last featured in the final of the marquee event against Australia which was played at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
The pacer will likely to make a comeback in the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh which is scheduled to start in September this year and after that Rohit Sharma & Co. will travel to Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024 where Shami will be the vital cog for India.
