SmallRig’s new Vibe P96 Pro and P108 Pro are compact mini LED video lights designed for on-camera use for photo and video applications. The lightweight, compact design is great, but even better, the lights start at $25.
The primary differentiation between the two lights, aside from slightly different control layouts on the back, is color. The Vibe P96 Pro Mini LED Video Light is a bi-color LED that ranges from cooler to warmer “white” tones. On the other hand, the SmallRig P108 Pro is a full-color RGB Mini LED video light.
SmallRig positions the P96 as a desktop fill light, ideal for adding a bit of pop. The company says the P108 Pro is a “professional close-up and flat lay fil light.” The two lights also differ a bit in the materials used, with the P96 built of polycarbonate and the P108 featuring a textured aluminum shell.
In both cases, the lights’ intensities are adjusted with a stepless ring knob, providing seamless control from 0 to 100% brightness. The lights are designed to be controlled using one hand so that an operator can maintain a grip on their camera. Each includes a circular display showing battery life, color temperature, hue/saturation/luminance information, and brightness.
SmallRig says the lights can be used for more light painting, fill light, product photography, and more, including attached to a phone cage or other rig, thanks to versatile mounting solutions.
No matter the application, color accuracy and consistency matter. Both lights are rated for a CRI greater than 95 and a TLCI above 98. They also promise the same maximum light output of 1,150 lux at 0.3 meters at 5,600K color temperature. They aren’t exceptionally powerful, but then again, the five-watt lights are compact, lightweight, and start at $25, so expectations for output must be kept in context. They are ideal for lighting small objects from up close or providing some accent or fill light on a larger subject in a reasonably dim environment.
The lights offer up to 70 minutes of battery life at full power and recharge via a USB Type-C slot. Each light weighs about 110-120 grams (3.9-4.3 ounces). The P96 includes five built-in lighting special effects, while the full-color P108 offers a dozen.
