Best hair products Australia: Dyson finally moves into haircare products. Here are my honest thoughts about the range

When it comes to haircare and nailing a salon-ready look from home, there is only one brand I turn to and one name that comes up again and again.

Since Dyson made the foray into haircare in 2016 with the launch of their revolutionary Supersonic hairdryer, the brand has completely changed the hair game.

And subsequent launches like the Airwrap and the Airstrait have only solidified the British brand’s status as top dog.

Dyson’s latest creation is no exception, and sees the experts move into haircare products for the very first time.

Chitosan ($89 each) is a new range of products that includes a range of pre-styling priming creams and post-styling hair serums designed to cater to different hair types and condition preferences.

Whether your hair is smooth and straight or thick and coily, there is a product in the range for you.

Each Chitosan buy promises to help to create long-lasting and flexible all-day hold without compromising on movement and shine.

Plus, the Chitosan range also helps to minimise frizz by up to fifty per cent, as well as enhancing shine, softening and smoothing your locks.

But how, I hear you ask?

The secret, as always with Dyson, is in the technology and the formulation.

The powerful hero ingredient, Chitosan, is a molecule from a shellfish derivative.

Through research, Dyson sourced a version of Chitosan from oyster mushrooms.

A delicate yet powerful ingredient, this is what provides the basis of Dyson’s flexible hold — much like a mushroom.

The lightweight ingredient works to reinforce the structure of the hair without affecting movement or flexibility.

It works perfectly in conjuction with Dyson’s hair technology and promises to give you a look that will go the distance.

“Whilst some other styling products use simple polymers that stick the strands of hair together like glue, Dyson’s formulas work differently,” James Dyson said in a statement.

“When used in Dyson Chitosan formulas, the complex macro molecule helps create flexible bonds that support hair strand by strand, for flexible all day hold, with movement and shine.”

The Product Development Director of New Ventures at Dyson Justina Mejia Montane added: “Each bottle harnesses the power of up to eight oyster mushrooms”.

The range comprises a Pre-Style Cream ($89) to prime the locks, as well as a Post-Style Serum ($89) to define.

Each are available for three different hair types, so you can perfectly tailor your product to your type.

The Pre-Style Cream transforms from a cream to a sheer serum as you work the formula in your hands for even application, and touchable, long-lasting hold with a natural feel.

The Post-Style Serum is engineered for all hair types, and holds and defines your end style, for soft, flexible all-day hold with movement and shine.

You use it on dry, styled hair.

What I love about both of these products having tried them ahead of launch is that they don’t leave my hair feeling crispy like many styling products, but rather it feels defined and styled.

I love the re-fillable nature of the containers (re-fills cost $79), as well as the fact that my hair looks soft and shiny with the products in.

I also found my blow dry lasted an extra day with the help of the styling products — no mean feat.

With naturally frizzy hair, I lean to the Chitosan rich-conditioning formulas.

The bottles also promise precision dosing, which means you get the exact right amount of product every time and so aren’t left wasting precious serum.

“Dyson products have changed the way we style, forever,” said President of Dyson Beauty Kathleen Pierce.

“Working with the engineers now, it’s inspiring to see that they set no boundaries and leave no stone unturned when it comes to innovating solutions to our common problems. It’s what gets us up every morning.”

How can you quickly identify your hair type and what styling products should you use for straight hair, wavy hair and curly hair?

It’s very easy to identify your natural hair type.

To find which applies to you, imagine your hair has been washed and left to air-dry. What shape do the majority of the strands take?

There are four main hair types:

  • Type 1: Straight to wavy hair. This hair type can require washing more regularly than other types to avoid a build-up of oils.
  • Type 2: Wavy to curly hair, often described as a wavy ‘S’ shape. This hair type also requires regular washing as oils can progress down the hair strand more easily.
  • Type 3: Curly hair with tighter ringlets, curly hair can often suffer from dryness due to a lack of sebum across the hair strands.
  • Type 4: Curly to coily hair types.

People with types 1 and 2 can often experience a lack of volume and style retention, so steer towards styling products with strong hold, without products that will weigh down your hair.

Types 3 and 4 require more moisturising styling products to keep the curls fresh as the hair can be more coarse and dry in texture.

Anything each hair type should steer away from? Why?

People with naturally fine and type 1 hair tend to get greasy roots faster than those with other hair textures as with increased follicles, the scalp produces more oil.

At Dyson, they understand that finer hair tends to feel weighed down by styling products, therefore their light conditioning formulas use grapeseed oil to nourish and enhance softness and hold, without adding excess weight or a greasy feel to the hair.

People with types 3-4 hair should avoid products with sulphates as they can strip the hair of its natural oils.

Curly hair tends to be more coarse and dry than other hair types, so it is important to replenish with moisture-rich styling creams to inject moisture and hydration back into your hair.

In the same way, Dyson knows thicker, prone to dryness and damaged hair needs more nourishment, and therefore, their rich conditioning formulas use more intensely nourishing ingredients, such as castor seed oil, to condition for a soft, long-lasting style on hair that needs more care.

How should we best integrate the Chitosan range into our haircare regime?

Dyson Chitosan styling products have been designed for use with all Dyson hair care machines, however, you can integrate the pre and post-styling creams into your existing hair care routine as the range is compatible with all styling routines, no matter the device you are using.

These products are the perfect partner to help your styles last longer — from curls or blowouts styled with the Dyson Airwrap multi-styler and dryer, to natural straight looks styled with the Dyson Airstrait straightener.

The Pre-styling Cream should be used before styling, on damp, towel-dried hair after it’s been washed and the Post-Style Serum should be used after styling, on dry hair.
