A Collaborative Effort: Airstream and REI Introduce a Brand New 20-Foot Basecamp Model

Airstream still makes its iconic shiny aluminum camping trailer, but the company has expanded its offerings to include other floorplans and trailer shapes. Recently, Airstream’s smaller models have gained popularity as more affordable alternatives to the high-priced classic trailers. Airstream has now partnered with renowned outdoor retailer REI to create a unique version of the 20-foot Basecamp trailer.

This marks the second collaboration between the two esteemed American companies, resulting in the creation of the Basecamp trailer available in both 16- and 20-foot models. The larger REI Co-Op Special Edition Basecamp 20X retains the convenient rear hatch door while incorporating more sustainable and environmentally-friendly materials compared to its predecessor.

Despite not being the flagship Airstream trailer, the Basecamp 20X can accommodate up to four people and includes UV-LED water filtration with a recirculating water heater. It also comes with a 25-piece REI camping set and the option to upgrade to a 360-watt solar charging system and power bank. Additionally, the trailer is designed for off-road adventures, featuring a three-inch lift and off-road tires for stability on various terrains.

Despite its compact size, the Basecamp is impressively well-equipped. It features a kitchenette, an indoor bathroom with a toilet and shower, and an exterior shower for those who enjoy outdoor activities or need to clean a dirty pet. Similar to the standard trailer, the REI special edition offers a convertible sleeping area and storage spaces cleverly integrated into every corner.

Airstream provides a range of color and decor choices for the base trailer, while the REI special edition boasts birch cabinetry and a spruce green color theme. Weighing in at just 3,500 pounds, the Basecamp trailer can be towed by a smaller vehicle. However, it’s worth noting that the 20-foot model starts at $62,400, not including optional features and taxes. The smaller 16-foot model is priced slightly lower at $52,900.
