Media personality Abbie Chatfield has opened up on a recent health scare – and sent an urgent message to her followers in the process.

The 28-year-old took to Instagram to reveal she had been in hospital for several days with a kidney infection, and warned fans not to try to work through, push past or ignore physical pain.

“Hello everyone, only now able to use my phone because I’ve been so sick but I’ve been in hospital for the last three days,” the video began.

“Lol sick girl lately.”

A series of captioned photographs showed Chatfield in hospital.

“This is your reminder to advocate for your pain and stop pushing through for work or because you think it isn’t serious enough to go to hospital,” she wrote on one.

“I had a kidney infection and was basically in denial about how bad it was, so I didn’t go straight to the hospital, despite crying from the pain in my bladder and back.

“I just thought my oral antibiotics would fix it.”

Chatfield said she then got on a plane for work and ended up in hospital away from home.

“I didn’t want to mess anyone around so I just tried to do the work I had planned to do (like I always stupidly do),” she wrote.

“And now I’ve ended up messing everyone around more and also I’m very sick in a place none of my friends or family can come visit me.”

Chatfield went on to say that if anyone had urinary tract infection (UTI) symptoms and back pain or nausea, they should go to hospital straight away.

“I knew this logically because I’m a UTI queen but was taking a chance I shouldn’t have, (I) thought I could work,” she wrote, adding it was her second time in hospital in a month.

“Anyway, just remember to try to connect with the pain you’re having instead of distracting yourself from it.

“I was in denial until I actually got to hospital and ended up needing fentanyl and oxycodone as well as valium to stop it once I allowed myself to feel it.

“So I was asleep the last two days basically.”

In her final video slide, Chatfield noted that women especially tended to minimise their pain in order to push through.

“This time I had someone with me advocating for my pain and it made such a difference,” she wrote.

“I’m usually in pain throughout entire hospital stays because it’s pain I can ‘handle’ and AFAB (assigned female at birth) people are just used to being in constant pain.

“But this time having someone recognise my pain and say ‘she’s not okay’ has been amazing.

“The nurses and doctors can’t help you if you’re pretending you’re okay when you’re not.”
