Adelaide Crows, Port Adelaide Power fly to Victoria after coronavirus chaos takes hold

UPDATE: Adelaide and Port Adelaide will board flights bound for Victoria tonight after a chaotic day for the AFL that has forced multiple plan changes due to the quickly evolving COVID-19 situation.

It’s understood the Power will face the Magpies on Friday night at Marvel Stadium, while the Crows will take on the Hawks on Saturday at the same venue.

Both the Power and Crows were initially scheduled to have their matches at Adelaide Oval before things took a turn for the worst.

After initially being told they would today fly to Queensland, their path to the sunshine state was blocked due to fresh COVID cases being reported in their home state.

The cancelled flight looked set to keep both clubs grounded in Adelaide, with the potential for the scheduled Round 21 Showdown to be brought forward to this weekend but that plan was shelved due to fears the two clubs could be trapped in South Australia for several weeks, potentially bringing the competition to a grinding halt.

With that risk in mind the AFL directed both South Australian clubs to fly to Victoria tonight, where they will await a decision from the league on how the competition will proceed.

It all amounts to a confused mess, with COVID-19 outbreaks creating logistical nightmares on multiple fronts.

Essendon, Brisbane, Gold Coast, GWS and Sydney are all currently based in Queensland.

South Australia will go into a seven-day lockdown from 6pm tonight after the state recorded two new cases of coronavirus in the community.

Premier Steven Marshall confirmed the outbreak was the highly transmissible Delta strain.

“The reality is we are dealing with a different variant to last year’s Parafield cluster,” Marshall said.

“This is a highly infectious strain and that is why we are taking these extreme precautions.”
