Adria Arjona: ‘Andor’ is a mirror of what the world is going through

The new ‘Star Wars’ series ‘Andor’ debuted on Wednesday and helping us navigate through this galaxy far, far away, is Adria Arjona. The actress, who plays the character Bix, opposite Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor, sat down for a candid chat with ETimes via video call, where she spilled the beans about her role in the 12-part series.

Fierce, fearless and feisty, this one “is not afraid to get her hands dirty,” she tells us as she walks us through the ‘Star Wars’ series that gives glimpses into the day-to-day lives of the people who rise against oppressors to become heroes of the galaxy.

We asked Adria what attracted her to Bix and pat came her reply, “So many things attracted me to her. I think she is incredibly fearless and caring and I think she would do anything for a friend or someone she cares about. She is not afraid to get her hands dirty.”

As this is the first time we are seeing her character on-screen, we had to ask what went into bringing her to life. Giving credit where credit is due, Arjona says, “I think Tony Gilroy is such an incredible writer. He makes it easy for you to create this character. He really keeps you in the loop and informed and answers all your questions with such ease that you are left with no doubts. That’s a good place to start working from.”

She may play the part of a mechanic on-screen, but you can trust this beauty to fix up a machine off-screen as well. Spilling a little secret of her new-found passion, she says, “I do love that I get to play with big metal pieces and get physical with it. I got to enjoy that part. I got into welding and fixing vehicles. I watched way too many YouTube videos of that and I got serious about it. If it weren’t for COVID-19, I may have actually been welding, but I couldn’t.”

The series debuted with three episodes that were enough to give us brief introductions to the many characters and their affiliations. You didn’t have to be a body language expert to see the tension and chemistry between Bix and Cassian. Should fans be gearing up to see this ship sail, Adria let us in on the relationship and warned, “Oh! It’s complex and very complicated!”

“They are childhood friends and you can sense that there are so many layers and history there. You can almost feel like trust is broken and rebuilt over and over again. Every time he comes into her life, her life is stable and working and productive and he comes in and wants you to lie, or do something because he has done something and you are like, ‘Oh! here we go again on this Cassian rollercoaster’,” she explains while going on to add, “It is sort of his journey to finding the greater good.”

‘Andor’, which debuted on Disney+ Hotstar, is set five years before the hit 2016 film ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’. The film saw Luna’s character sacrifice himself for the greater good.

With a politically charged plot that could spark a need for reform, we asked Adria how she thought this series fit into today’s political climate and how ‘Andor’ is different from the many other ‘Star Wars’ shows released over the past months.

“I think I can answer both of those questions in just one answer,” she said and explained, “Tony created this about ordinary people who have nothing in common, yet somehow have everything in common. They are at the cusp of a revolution and I don’t think we have seen that in the other Star Wars.”

She further added, “I do think they made a show about us and people like us! You get to see the day-to-day lives of people in the galaxy and you understand the culture, traditions and rituals that happen within this world.”

“It is incredibly smart and I do believe that it is a sort of mirror of what we are going through in a way,” she concluded.

A new episode of ‘Andor’ will air every Wednesday. Season 2 of the series that will lead up to the beginning of the ‘Rogue One’ movie has already been greenlit at the studios.
