The Nissan Z is a unique car and this review will share my experience driving it. The 2023 Nissan Z is a rear-wheel-drive two-seater car that embodies the spirit of the Z nameplate. The new Z has a stylish design that pays homage to the earliest days of the Z. It features a three-liter, 400-horsepower twin-turbo V6 engine, which is a significant upgrade from the previous generation 370Z. Nissan has also equipped the new Z with modern technology, such as a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8-inch (or 9-inch for the Performance trim) infotainment touchscreen. These features come standard, unlike the previous 370Z where they were optional. However, if you closely analyze the new Z’s profile, you’ll notice similarities to its predecessor, the Z34. The interior of the new Z also retains some elements from the 370Z, including switches, climate dials, vents, dashboard gauges, and door handles. While some critics may point out the presence of plastics and outdated features like the orange LEDs, the overall functionality and quality of these components remain solid. It is worth noting that my Z model had additional features like a limited-slip differential, beefier brakes, and forged 19-inch Rays alloys, which brought the total cost to $54,055.
When it comes to driving performance, the new Z delivers an impressive experience. With its increased horsepower and torque, the new Z is undeniably fast. However, its agility might not be as remarkable. The car’s weight has increased due to the twin-turbo engine, which affects its overall handling. The Z’s ride can be harsh, especially on uneven surfaces, causing it to bounce. This might have an impact on track performance, but in real-world driving scenarios, it remains predictable and intuitive. The steering is weighty and responsive, while the clutch is slightly long but easy to engage. The six-speed manual transmission provides a satisfying shifting experience, particularly with the added SynchroRev Match feature that seamlessly blips the throttle for smooth downshifts. The Z offers a classic and straightforward driving experience, with a certain charm that many enthusiasts can appreciate.
In terms of interior design, the Z has its quirks. The windshield is slender, the side mirrors are thick and obstruct visibility, and rear visibility is limited. However, with time and experience, these obstacles can be overcome. While the Z is a two-seater sports car, its interior space could be utilized more efficiently. The high and flat floor behind the liftgate makes it challenging to fit more than one bag of carry-on luggage. However, there are small cubbies behind each seat that can accommodate a bag or two of groceries. Despite the limited space, the Z’s interior features fresh design elements, and the red leather in my tester model added a touch of luxury. The infotainment system gets the job done, although the built-in navigation app can be overwhelming. The climate control dials and circular vents are remnants of older Nissan models but bring a sense of nostalgia and functionality. There are some minor drawbacks, such as underpowered heated seats, the absence of automatic headlights without auto high-beams, and a low-resolution backup camera. On a positive note, the V6 engine is not excessively loud, allowing for easy conversation even at higher speeds.
Overall, the 2023 Nissan Z offers a unique driving experience with a blend of modern and nostalgic elements. While it may not break new ground in terms of performance, it remains a fun and enjoyable sports car. The Z’s flaws, such as its harsh ride and limited interior space, can be overlooked considering its affordable price and solid functionality. As enthusiasts, we have a choice to either criticize the Z for its compromises or appreciate it for what it is—an uncomplicated, buzzy, and old-school sports car that exudes charm.
