Chop Bar, a popular spot for American comfort food in Oakland’s Jack London Square, has closed after 14 years, reported East Bay Nosh. The restaurant first opened in 2009 and moved to its current, larger location half a block away in 2019.

“This decision was not made lightly, as there were many prior conversations surrounding how to keep Chop running successfully,” management at Chop Bar told Nosh. “But in the end, we decided that closing would be best to preserve the integrity and memories created by everyone who loved Chop Bar.”

Chop Bar did not return SFGATE’s request for comment in time for publication.

A note on the gastropub’s website indicates a temporary closure for Chop Bar starting July 10, but the restaurant has yet to announce on its website or social media that the closure is now permanent.

Chop Bar was known for its hearty breakfast, lunch and dinner offerings and wine-on-tap system. The brunch menu featured a vegetable frittata, breakfast burrito and chilaquiles, while dinner featured oxtail poutine, meatloaf and vegetable rigatoni. Chop Bar’s name comes from a West African term for a roadside bar or restaurant that serves as a gathering place for the community, according to Chop Bar’s website.

“It is a place where neighbors can meet, share information and ideas, and connect with each other,” reads its website. “When we were considering opening this restaurant, we felt that a chop bar was exactly what this neighborhood needed!”
