Alex Carey to captain Australia after Aaron Finch ruled out of West Indies ODI

Alex Carey will captain Australia against the West Indies in Wednesday’s ODI clash after Aaron Finch was ruled out through injury.

The veteran opener is still battling a knee problem, leaving the door open for Carey to debut as skipper. The World Cup winner will be assessed daily and could be in doubt for the second and third games.

Finch’s injury is another blow for the Aussies whose batting stocks have already taken a hit.

The Aussies are now without Finch, David Warner, Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne and Glenn Maxwell.

“It’s really exciting to be appointed the captain,” Carey said on this morning. “It’s never good news to have the captain of the Australian cricket team miss through injury.

“Firstly to Finchy, we hope he recovers really quickly. We understand how good a player he is on the field and what he brings on and off the field.

“When I was given the news it was made really clear how I was held in the group. My cricket didn’t change, my mentality didn’t change.

“It was a great opportunity the vice-captaincy when I did have it. To be recognised over here in Barbados to lead the group out is just excitement right now.”

Carey has had a taste of leadership at senior level, having captained Australia A, South Australia and the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League. Coach Justin Langer said he deserves the call up.

“For a long period of time Alex has shown an extremely high level of professionalism and discipline as a fantastic leader within this group,” Langer said.

“The injury to Finchy gives Alex the opportunity of his first experience as captain. I have no doubt he will do a fantastic job with the support of the other senior players.”
