Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Monday endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, while sharply criticising former President Donald Trump.
During her speech, Cortez focused on economic policies and highlighted the growing unity within the Democratic Party. Her speech contrasted Harris’s dedication to the working class with Trump’s alleged prioritisation of the wealthy and big businesses.
Ocasio-Cortez criticised Trump’s economic strategies, accusing him of catering to the needs of the elite rather than ordinary Americans.
“We know Trump would sell this country for a dollar if it meant lining his own pockets and greasing the palms of his Wall Street friends,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
She further questioned Trump’s patriotism, by focusing on the stark difference between him and Harris.
“I, for one, am tired of hearing about how a two-bit union buster thinks of himself as more of a patriot than the woman who fights every single day to lift working people out from under the boots of greed trampling on our way of life”, she said.
Ocasio-Cortez also discussed the divergent visions for America, asserting that Trump’s policies were fundamentally at odds with the needs of the working class.
“The truth is, Don, you cannot love this country if you only fight for the wealthy and big business,” she said, underscoring Harris’s commitment to uplifting working Americans.
Her speech praised Harris’s dedication to addressing the struggles faced by ordinary Americans, drawing parallels between her own and Harris’s working-class backgrounds. Ocasio-Cortez hailed Harris’s understanding of the challenges faced by many in the country.
“To love this country is to fight for its people — all people, working people, everyday Americans like bartenders and factory workers and fast-food cashiers who punch a clock and are on their feet all day in some of the toughest jobs out there,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
The speech was a clear call for unity within the Democratic Party, urging members to rally behind Harris and Biden in opposition to Trump’s influence. Ocasio-Cortez’s pointed remarks and endorsement of Harris indicated the party’s posturing towards advocating for a government that prioritises the needs of the many over the few.
