Ali Fazal shared details about how director Rajkumar Hirani discovered him for “3 Idiots.” According to Ali, Hirani saw him in a play at Prithvi Theatre during his third year. Despite not recalling the specific play, Ali remembered receiving a call and going to the audition wearing the same shirt he used to wear four times a week. Fortunately, he got cast, and interestingly, they asked him to bring the same shirt in which he auditioned, adding a touch of authenticity to his character in the film.
Ali Fazal shared additional details about the challenges faced with his shirt during the filming of “3 Idiots.” Explaining the situation, he said, “The issue was that there was a scene in which I am wearing the shirt and my character hangs himself. How do you shoot that scene? So they have to put a harness which goes through my shirt.” Concerned about his shirt, Ali expressed, “But that’s my shirt.” However, the filmmakers assured him that they would stitch it back neatly, and indeed, they did.
To show his appreciation, director Rajkumar Hirani gifted Ali a jacket, considering the winter weather during that time of filming. Ali still cherishes both the shirt, bought for Rs 40 at Fashion Street in Mumbai, and the jacket as mementos from his experience on the set of ‘3 Idiots.’
