The anticipation is on an all time high as India will play in the World Cup Final 2023 tomorrow. Bollywood celebs like Shah Rukh Khan, Suniel Shetty, Sidharth Malhotra, Ajay Devgn and many others celebrated India’s knockout performance in the semi finals against New Zealand. But this craze for cricket among Bollywood stars has been there since time immemorial. Filmmaker Manmohan Desai’s sets used to have a television set, recalls film historian Dilip Thakur.
In an exclusive conversation with ETimes, Thakur reveals, “I have a photograph where Desai and Amitabh Bachchan are watching a cricket match between two takes. Actor Laxmikant Berde also used to have a TV set during shoots. He would watch cricket in between shots. When Prakash Pangey had called the media on the sets of Allah Rakha, Ketan Desai was shooting inside and acting as well. Manmohan Desai and Shammi Kapoor were watching cricket match outside on TV. Manmohan Desai was a cricket lover. He used to stay in Khetwadi, Mumbai and he used to play cricket on Golden Krida Maidan every Sunday with a tennis ball. If you go to Lamington Road even today you can find Desai’s name on the board of the cricket club.”

When India won the Cricket World Cup in 1983 at The Lord’s in England, rallies were carried out in Mumbai all night. “The day after the next day there was a news in Loksatta that on the night of India’s victory, actor-filmmaker Raj Kapoor while returning from a party, got down from his car and danced in the rally,” Thakur recalls.
“Now, you can watch cricket on your mobile phone. Back in the day, you had to arrange a TV set on a film set. Anil Kapoor used to go watch live cricket in Sharjah. Laxmikant Berde also used to go watch live cricket matches. Many film stars have participated in friendly charity matches,” concludes Dilip Thakur.
