AOC intends to file articles of impeachment after Supreme Court ruling

(NewsNation) — U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says she intends to file articles of impeachment after the Supreme Court ruled former President Donald Trump was immune from prosecution in certain cases.

Ocasio-Cortez, a Representative of New York, called the court corrupt in a post on X after it ruled by a split decision that Trump was immune from criminal behavior when acting in the “official” capacity of the office of president.

“Today’s ruling represents an assault on American democracy. It is up to Congress to defend our nation from this authoritarian capture. I intend on filing articles of impeachment upon our return,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote.

The 6-3 decision effectively sends Trump’s case back to a lower court to determine what conduct he can be prosecuted for.

To impeach a federal official, any member of the House of Representatives may bring articles of impeachment against them, and then the House must take a vote. If the House adopts the articles by a majority vote, the official is impeached.

Then, the U.S. Senate holds an impeachment trial. If the official is found guilty, they will be removed from office.

According to the Supreme Court, the only Justice to be impeached was Associate Justice Samuel Chase in 1805. Chase was impeached by the House and then acquitted by the Senate.
