Apple had plans to go big with the iPad, readying a 14-inch iPad Pro for launch this year, but eventually scrapped the plan for this ‘jumbo’ iPad in its final moments.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman was the first to report that designers and engineers at Apple were exploring the possibility of iPads with bigger screens, which could further blur the line between a tablet and a laptop.
A tipster claimed that Apple was developing a new iPad featuring a 14.1-inch display and the M2 chip. This rumour was backed up by Ross Young, stating that the iPad would feature a miniLED display but would not have ProMotion for variable refresh rates up to 120Hz. However, in July of last year, Young updated his forecast, stating that instead of a mini-LED display, Apple had opted for an LCD display, similar to those used in the iPad mini and iPad Air.
Last year, it was reported that multiple suppliers, including BOE and LG, were converting their factories to supply Apple with OLED displays around 15 inches in size that would be suitable for future iPad models.
However, The Information later reported that Apple was working on a much larger iPad, aiming to release it in the fourth quarter of 2023. The new iPad is expected to have a screen size similar to that of a 16-inch MacBook Pro, which would give users a much larger screen to work with. Subsequently, Young suggested that Apple had cancelled plans to release a 14.1-inch iPad.
Now, Gurman notes that there is no such product in the pipeline, at least for this year. While a 14-inch or a 16-inch iPad might not be coming soon, the iPad Pro is poised to get big, even a few decimal inches. Gurman reports that a 12.9-inch iPad Pro is expected to get a big next year, measuring 13 inches, and would feature an OLED instead of microLED.
