Apple veteran DJ Novotney, a vice president of hardware engineering who helped kickstart the development of Apple Car, is leaving the company. Novotney, who spent 25 years at Apple working on home devices, is joining Rivian, according to a report from Bloomberg.
Novotney will join Rivian as the senior vice president of the vehicle program, reporting directly to the automaker’s CEO, RJ Scarnige, on Monday. He is the second key Apple executive to leave for Rivian. Earlier this month, Jonas Reinke, the head of product, mobility, and auto services at Apple, left the company to join Rivian as a vice president of product management. Before joining Apple, Reinke worked with Porsche, and at Rivian, he is leading the efforts to launch new EV platforms, R2 and R3.
Sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that Novotney informed his colleagues about his exit on Friday. “Great products are what we do best, and I have been so very lucky along the way to be part of so many amazing teams that developed everything from iPod, iPhone, iPad, Watch, and so many more. “Apple has been my life, but now is the time for me to move on and help bring to life a new set of products, ” Novotney wrote in a memo announcing his departure.
DJ Novotney, who was one of the early members of Project Titan, left the car project amid restructuring. He was serving as a senior executive for the team developing home devices. His responsibilities also involved overlooking the robotics and artificial intelligence efforts.
Over the past few weeks, Apple has seen many key executives either leaving or retiring. Tang Tan, another key executive, a VP of product design for iPhone and Apple Watch, is leaving the company next month for Ive’s design firm, LoveFrom. Steve Hotelling, hardware technologies leader, left late last year. Over the last year, Apple has lost more than a dozen high-ranking executives.
