Love is a many-splendored thing, especially when you’re gawking at it from the outside. In this column, we’ll be examining the celebrity couples that give us hope for our own romantic futures and trying to learn what we can from their well-documented bonds.
I’m as unwillingly interested in the details of Taylor Swift’s dating life as the next 30-year-old trying not to think about what her grandparents were up to at her same age (my grandma already had two kids by this point, but who’s counting?)—so, obviously, I was thrilled and confused to learn that Swift’s latest rumored consort is not another whiny musician, not another random-ish actor, but a full-on football star: Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, to be exact.
The couple nicknames are already coming in fast, though neither Swift nor Kelce has (formally) confirmed their relationship yet; all we have to go on right now is Kelce saying on a podcast that he tried to get Swift’s attention using one of the instantly iconic friendship bracelets from her Eras Tour, along with a more recent—and possibly conclusive—instance of the two driving away in a convertible after a Chiefs home game that Swift attended (sitting next to Kelce’s mom, NBD). It’s giving the end of Grease!
I’m pretty much a fan of whomever Swift sees fit to date, with the obvious exception of Matty Healy, but I have to admit that I’m feeling more partial to the pop-star-and-athlete pairing by the minute. No, I’m not really a sports fan (unless you count my super gay interest in women’s athletics, which I don’t, because it’s definitely more about the celesbian-spotting than a love of the game), but, like most of us, I just want to see Swift happy. Do I think that a big, hunky, all-American athlete is a step up in that direction versus a mean, skinny, nicotine-addled Brit? Kind of!
I learned today that Kelce rented out a restaurant for Swift and his team after the big game, and for some reason, that piece of information was the final one I needed to officially join Team Kelce. I know almost nothing about the man, and TBH, I don’t know much about Swift (at least compared to the truly dedicated Swifties out there who can probably rattle off her Social Security number), but there’s something so charming and thoughtful about Mr. Big-Time Football Guy ensuring that Swift, and his homies, would be properly fed after watching his exploits on the field.
