As parts of NSW brace for more storms forecast this weekend, Armidale is cleaning up after a tornado left a trail of destruction throughout the Northern Tablelands town on Thursday.

Dangerous storms ripped through regional NSW on Thursday evening, cutting power to thousands of homes, ripping roofs from homes and flipping cars.

The NSW SES Armidale Unit issued a statement early Friday urging residents not to hesitate in contacting them for assistance.

“Half of the town is currently without power and we’ve received 122 calls for assistance,” the SES Armidale Planning Officer told the public in a statement.

“We are working as quickly as we can to get to those calls, but it is going to take some time. We really appreciate everyone’s patience, if you do need our assistance please contact 132 500.”

Are more storms in store for NSW this weekend?

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has cancelled the severe storms warning for NSW that was issued earlier on Friday.

“The immediate threat of severe thunderstorms has passed, but the situation will continue to be monitored and further warnings will be issued if necessary,” BOM advised.

Some showers and storms are still forecasted to continue for many areas across the state, but are mostly easing Friday with more settled weather forecasted for Sunday.
