B.C. Sikhs Petition for Federal Investigation into Gurdwara Leader’s Murder

Some members of B.C.’s Sikh community are calling for a federal investigation into the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the president of Surrey’s Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara. Nijjar was shot and killed in the temple’s parking lot on the evening of June 18. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is leading the probe into the targeted killing, but has not released any information on a possible motive. Members of the Sikh community have launched an E-Petition urging the federal government to investigate Nijjar’s murder, including allegations of foreign interference. The petition describes Nijjar as an upright, law-abiding member of the Sikh community and emphasizes the need for immediate attention from the Canadian government. Many in the community fear for their own safety and want answers about who was behind the assassination. The Gurdwara secretary also supports the investigation and claims that Nijjar was a victim of character assassination and false allegations made by the Indian government. Despite Indian authorities accusing him of terrorism, Nijjar had consistently advocated for Sikh rights and denied any involvement in violent acts. Prior to his death, Nijjar had expressed concerns about threats he was receiving due to his political activism. The World Sikh Organization of Canada has also requested an investigation into whether India played a role in the killing. Surrey-Newton Liberal MP Sukh Dhaliwal sponsored the E-Petition and emphasized the importance of addressing this issue as it occurred at a place of worship. The homicide investigation team has not confirmed or denied any threats against Nijjar prior to his death but has stated that they will investigate the reports. The E-Petition has already gathered close to 1,000 signatures, surpassing the required amount for presentation to the House of Commons. The government will have 45 days to respond once the petition closes on August 3.
