A massive late rally just fell short for the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday night.
Trailing 19-4, the Leafs scored 15 times over the final three innings, but it still wasn’t enough as the Barrie Baycats hung on for a thrilling 20-19 win in Intercounty Baseball League action at Dominico Field.
Sean Reilly homered with two outs in the bottom of the ninth for Toronto (3-3) to cut the lead to one, but Brad Grieverson nailed down the final out to earn the save and help Barrie (3-1) hold on.
Baycats starter Juan Benitez went five strong innings, giving up three runs on just three hits to pick up the win. Michael Asta was handed the loss on the mound for the Leafs, giving up eight runs over two innings.
Grieverson got four outs to earn the save for Barrie.
Reilly, Damon Topolie, Justin Marra and Garret Takamatsu all homered for Toronto. Takamatsu had five runs batted in, while Reilly added four.
Michael Lacasse homered twice for Barrie, while Noel McGarry Doyle and Ryan Rijo, who drove in five, also went deep.
The Leafs return to action on Saturday afternoon at 1:05 p.m., when they kick off a home-and-home with the Welland Jackfish. The two teams return to Dominico Field on Sunday. Game time is 2 p.m.
