CHENNAI: Chief minister M K Stalin has condoled the death of Ilayaraj’s daughter Bhavatharani’s death and said that he was both shocked and saddened by her sudden demise.
Bhavatharani who was born into a family of musicians captured the hearts of many at a very young age, he said. Her unique voice made it easy to distinguish and identify her songs. Chief minister Stalin also recalled how the singer had bagged the national award for her song, in the film `Bharathi’ for which her father was the music director.She has also been music director for many films.

Her untimely death is a big loss to the music world, he said, extending his condolences to Ilayaraja and her family, including Yuvan Shankar Raja, Karthik Raja among others.

I have beautiful and memorable memories of Bhavatharani when we worked together for the 1995 movie ‘Raasaiyya’. Her first song ‘Masthana Masthana’ became popular overnight, says Amma Creations producer T Siva. “A humble person who never threw tantrums. She was awarded the National Film Award for best female playback Singer in 2000 for her rendition ‘Mayil Pola Ponnu Onnu’ from the film ‘Bharathi’ at a young age. A fete we all are proud of but at the same time the film industry has failed to encourage women musicians.
Siva feels she would have lived longer if her mother was still alive. She was very attached to her mother Jeeva Rajayya. “Every time she saw me, she would fondly mention that I was the one who gave her a big opportunity and encouraged her to sing for ‘Raasaiyya.’ Her adjustable nature was a quality all of us admired her for.”
Director, producer Chitra Lakshmanan says her bond with her younger brother Yuvan Shankar Raja was special. “Karthik Raja was more like their father Ilaiyaraaja. He would tag along with him in the morning and return home late in the night. She spent more time with Yuvan and both were attached to each other.”
