Beloved Margate wedding venue the Golden Ox up for sale

A beloved Brisbane wedding venue is up for sale, two months after it suddenly closed its doors.

The Golden Ox restaurant and function venue, located at 330 Oxley Ave in Margate, announced it would be shutting its doors on July 15 following the death of one of its owners.

“Hopefully we will be back again soon,” the restaurant said on its social media.

It would be in touch with people who had booked weddings, it said.

The site is now scheduled for auction on October 26, listed by Colliers under instruction from Shabnam Amirbeaggi of Crouch Amirbeaggi.

Amirbeaggi was appointed as receiver and manager on August 28, following the appointment of a liquidator on August 17.

“I understand the Golden Ox was an iconic establishment for the local area,” Amirbeaggi said.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for someone to re-establish the business and continue to operate what has been a landmark business for both the local area and the greater Brisbane region.

“I am looking forward to a successful sale on the day of the auction and the reopening of the doors to the community.”

The sudden closure of the site in July was met with furore from customers who had booked weddings at the venue, many of whom said they found out about the closure through social media.

“I can’t believe that instead of doing the right thing as a venue and informing the people that have functions booked and have put thousands of dollars down, they get to find out on Facebook,” one person said.

Another customer said they had lost thousands on their wedding booked in for December.

7NEWS understands one couple was left with just weeks to plan an entirely new wedding.
