Best desk light Australia: Dyson launches revolutionary new lamp that ‘intelligently transforms for different uses’

It’s the British tech brand that has brought us everything from clever vacuums that also mop to “game-changing” Airwrap hair stylers that give perfect bouncy blow dries in seconds without any damage.

And now, James Dyson has turned his hand to another product you never knew you needed until Dyson launched it: lighting.

The new Dyson Solarcycle Morph Desk Light (from $649.99), which hits shelves across Australia on September 21, is unlike other desk lamps, insofar as it doesn’t just give out one form of light at all different times of the day.

Instead, the clever Solarcycle Morph Desk Lights tracks natural daylight during the course of the day and intelligently transforms for different uses – providing the right light at the right time, precisely where it is needed.

But what does that mean in real life, I hear you say?

Well, owners of the Dyson Solarcycle can adjust the glow it emits depending on their age, task, mood and local visibility.

You can also move the lamp around 360 degrees, in order to provide customised light when and where it matters.

This will help with visual fatigue and eye strain caused by low lighting, according to Dyson’s engineers.

“With the Dyson Solarcycle Morph, our aim was to challenge the fundamental conventions of contemporary artificial lighting and find a solution,” Dyson’s Chief Engineer Jake Dyson said.

“So we developed a light that tracks natural day light and intelligently transforms for different uses – providing the right light, at the right time, precisely where it’s needed.”

Dyson says the light can be used four different ways – as an indirect light, a focused and powerful “task” light for work, a feature light and an ambient light, which creates a warm and ambient orange glow.

“When trying to recreate the characteristics of daylight, light quality is vital. So we developed a way to protect it for the long term,” Jake said.

The lamp can also be synced with the MyDyson App for a customised experience, and you can set the light to come on at a certain time – and get brighter throughout the day.

The MyDyson app can also adjust the light based on your age.

This is because, according to Dyson’s own research, a 65-year-old needs up to four times more light than a 20-year-old.

The Dyson Solarcycle Morph Desk Light is available from today (21 September) in black, white and silver form $649.99. For more information, head to the Dyson website here.

The four different types of light the Dyson light emits

INDIRECT LIGHT

The intelligent optical head smoothly rotates 360 degrees to bounce light off walls, floors and ceilings.

TASK LIGHT

This light is focused, powerful light for work, hobbies, make-up application and intricate tasks. Helps improve visual acuity by emitting a pool of high-intensity light. A CRI (colour rendering index) of 90 or above means colours displayed are very close to daylight quality.

FEATURE LIGHT

This creates dramatic effects, highlighting art, colours and decorative features. Three-Point Revolve motion enables precise positioning.

AMBIENT LIGHT

The stem lights up to create a comforting orange glow. It is for evening relaxation with reduced blue light.
