Best supplement to take – expert warns of ‘micronutrient emergency’ in UK


The Health and Food Supplements Information Service (HSIS) revealed Britons are lacking in eight key nutrients.

These are vitamin D, folate, calcium, magnesium, selenium, iron, iodine and omega-3s.

All play a significant role in our health, the report stated, with Dr Carrie Ruxton stating the nutrients we absorb from food “impact our immune status and susceptibility to infection”.

Nutritionist Daisy Connor said: “Most people will struggle to get optimal levels of essential vitamins and minerals from a standard western diet.

“In fact, the HSIS went so far as to say we have a ‘micronutrient emergency’ in the UK.”

Connor added: “This is the result of multiple factors including poor food quality, prevalence of ultra-processed food, and the burden the modern environment places on our bodies.

“When exposed to more pollution and stress than ever before, it’s fair to say our bodies’ demands for nutrition have increased, and we don’t eat accordingly.”

This is why Connor is an advocate for a “quality multivitamin” instead of opting for only one type of vitamin supplement.

She elaborated: “It can be helpful to take a quality multivitamin to cover the basics, rather than taking single nutrients like a vitamin D tablet.

“The caveat; should your GP discover a deficiency you’ll likely need a higher dose of that nutrient than found in a multivitamin.”

Conner said: “If you take a multivitamin, it’s generally best taken with a meal since it contains fat-soluble vitamins like Vitamin E.

“Plus, zinc can make you feel nauseous on an empty stomach.”

Dr Nisa Aslam also commented on the 2021 report: “In an ideal world, we should get all our nutrients from the food on our plates. However, busy lifestyles make this hard.”

People are encouraged to enjoy eating a “spectrum of colourful fruit and veg, oily fish, dairy foods, lean meats, beans, legumes, nuts, soya foods and red meat”.

Before taking supplements it might be useful to check with your doctor first.
