Sinéad O’Connor’s friend, Bob Geldof, has opened up about his recent exchange with the late Grammy-winning singer-songwriter. Speaking at Ireland’s Cavan Calling Festival with his band the Boomtown Rats, Geldof revealed that he had been in contact with O’Connor right up until a couple of weeks ago. He described her as being full of terrible loneliness and despair, but also experiencing moments of happiness. Geldof and O’Connor grew up in the same Irish neighborhood and even took the same bus to school together. He also hinted that he may have partly inspired her controversial 1992 appearance on “Saturday Night Live,” where she tore up a photo of Pope John Paul II. Geldof praised O’Connor’s actions, comparing them to his own tearing up of a photo of John Travolta on “Top of the Pops.” O’Connor’s cause of death has not yet been disclosed. In tribute to her, singers Pink, Brandi Carlile, and Alanis Morissette have performed her songs, and various mental health support resources have been provided for those in need.
