A Brazilian singer has died suddenly in a freak accident while performing live on stage, as horrified fans watched on.

Ayres Sasaki, 35, was mid-performance at a hotel in Salinopolis, Brazil on Saturday when he was electrocuted on stage and died “instantly”, according to The Sun.

Early reports suggest a soaking wet fan came up to the singer and hugged him on stage, seconds before he suffered the electric shock from a cable and was killed.

Local police have launched an investigation into how the musician died, including finding out how the soaked fan became wet.

A statement from the Solar Hotel to The Sun said it was “co-operating with authorities”.

“We are fully dedicated to providing support to his family and taking the necessary measures,” the hotel said.

“We reaffirm our commitment to fully co-operating with the competent authorities for the proper clarification of the events.”

Sasaki’s social media said he also worked as an urban architect, and had married his wife less than a year before his death.

“A super charismatic guy, his talent was absurd,” Sasaki’s friend Adriano Freitas told local news site G1.

“He was the best voice and guitar player in Belém! A great friend, a great family man, attentive to his friends and to those who liked his work.

“We were friends in everyday life, beyond music.”
