Top Pitching Performance of the Week

For the second week in a row, the best performance by Brewers starting pitching belongs to Robert Gasser. In his second career start on Wednesday, he held the Pirates to one run — a sac fly by Connor Joe — in five innings. He scattered six singles and walked only one batter while striking out two in just 82 pitches, and his ERA through two starts sits at a sparkling 0.82.

In the bullpen, Bryan Hudson and Elvis Peguero led the way this week, each throwing three scoreless innings while allowing a combined one hit.

Top Hitting Performance of the Week

The story at the plate this week has been third baseman Joey Ortiz, who has, at least for now, taken full control of the third base job in Milwaukee, and who has been one of the league’s best hitters for some time now. Ortiz started all six games this week and went 10-for-22 with two home runs, three doubles, and four walks, for a batting line of .455/.520/.864.

There were other good performances this week too that merit mentioning: William Contreras actually lowered his season batting average but still had a .948 OPS and hit one of the biggest homers of the season. Sal Frelick also had a nice week, which he needed — he went 6-for-18 and hit his first two home runs of the season.

Injury Notes & Roster Moves

  • Rhys Hoskins: Hoskins pulled up lame after a base hit on Monday, and on Tuesday he was placed on the injured list with a hamstring strain. It doesn’t seem to be an especially bad strain, and Hoskins is expected to miss two to four weeks. Owen Miller was recalled to take his roster spot.
  • In a sort of surprising move, Chris Roller was recalled from Triple-A Nashville, with Oliver Dunn being sent down. With the emergence of Joey Ortiz, Dunn was finding at-bats difficult to come by, and the Brewers wanted him playing more often; expect Dunn to be back at some point this season.
  • Taylor Clarke was activated from the 15-day injured list and sent to Triple-A Nashville.
  • Joel Payamps returned from the bereavement list on Monday, and Janson Junk was optioned to Nashville to make room for him.
  • We also got injury updates on several prominent players. DL Hall was sent to Appleton for a rehab assignment with the Timber Rattlers on Sunday and pitched a perfect first inning with a strikeout. He will likely make at least a couple more rehab appearances. Joey Wiemer was sent to Triple-A Nashville on a rehab assignment, though he might stay there when he is activated. Devin Williams and J.B. Bukauskas played catch for the first time since their injuries. Garrett Mitchell is out of his finger brace and will resume hitting soon. Jakob Junis is slated to start throwing off a mound this week and may be ready for a return when his 60-day IL stint is up on June 2.
