To rent in the Toowong unit complex, tenants get a large, open-plan kitchen, dining room and deck — to share with other tenants.
For $300 a week, an individual studio in the complex includes a window, double bed, sink, bar fridge, ceiling fan, shower and toilet.
The inner-west property is everything quintessential Queensland architecture — breezy and bright with a focus on natural materials — isn’t.
“It’s a cell. The word you’re looking for is cell,” said one Facebook user.
A person on Reddit said they “immediately thought it looked like a depressing jail cell” when coming across the property ad on their own hunt for accommodation.
“Why pay for that when you can literally go to prison for free,” said a third person.
While others described it as “grim” and “bleak”, the real estate agent has labelled it “industrial”.
Given the fact Besser block is not known for its temperature regulation abilities, one Redditor who claimed to have lived in the building described it as being “a furnace during summer”.
One potential upside is if it floods — which is considered a possibility due to its proximity to the Brisbane River — at least the walls can probably be hosed clean.
