Home Health: Eye Flu in Delhi-NCR: Can Conjunctivitis Spread by Eye Contact? 5 Ways to Prevent Pink Eye
Eye flu, also known as pink eye or conjunctivitis, is spreading rapidly in Delhi-NCR. It has become an outbreak with almost 100 cases reported daily in Delhi. As the number of eye flu cases increases, health departments have issued advisories. The recent heavy rainfall and waterlogging in the capital have contributed to the rise in infections and other monsoon-related health hazards. Conjunctivitis is an infection and inflammation of the outer layer of the eye, the conjunctiva. It causes redness, swelling, watery eyes, and a sticky discharge. Patients may experience discomfort, irritation, and pain. Hemorrhages in the conjunctiva can make the eyes appear even more red. The infection is spread through contact with an infected person or contaminated surfaces.
However, it is a myth that conjunctivitis can spread just by looking at someone. It is not airborne, but highly contagious. One can only get infected by coming into contact with the bacteria from surfaces touched by infected individuals. Anyone in contact with an infected person is at risk of contracting eye flu. Children, in particular, are more susceptible due to their playful nature and tendency to be in groups, either at school or at home, increasing the chances of catching and spreading the infection.
Early symptoms of conjunctivitis include redness, increased watery discharge, swelling, itching, and a burning sensation. To prevent conjunctivitis, it is important to avoid touching or rubbing the eyes and other surfaces. Use a clean wipe to clear any discharge and dispose of it safely in a dustbin. Regularly wash hands, avoid crowded places to reduce the risk of spreading the infection, refrain from repeatedly touching the eyes, and avoid sharing personal items such as towels and makeup.
