Assamese actress Aimee Baruah stunned at the Cannes 2024 red carpet in a traditional Muga Silk saree with motifs speaking of Indian heritage.
Cannes 2024 witnessed a significant Indian representation from actors to content creators. The international film festival is not just a celebration of cinema but also becomes a grand fashion spectacle. All eyes are often on who wore what. Assam’s actress Aimee Baruah walked the red carpet of the 77th edition of the International Film Festival in a traditional Assamese attire boasting highly of India’s culture and heritage. For her third appearance at Cannes, Aimee draped herself in an elegant Mekhela Sador saree made of pure Muga Silk. It had 200-year-old motifs woven into it.

The entire Mekhela Sador is crafted from pure Muga silk yarn, harvested during October, November, and December, known for its rich golden hue and natural sheen. The sador body features the Gam Kharu Phool motif, using the finest Muga silk for a soft texture. Completing this signature piece took nearly two months.
Captinonsing a post on her social media, Baruah writes,”Representing our heritage, I was thrilled to walk the ramp in a two-hundred-year-old motif depicted on my Muga filled with intricate traditional designs, Gamkharu on my wrist, Assamese gamosa, Riha, and Kopou Phul (foxtail orchids) in my hairbun.”
According to the designer, “the attire featured ancient Ancient designs like goj bota and gam kharu phool. Goja Bota is showcases intricate floral and geometric patterns dating back to Ahom Dynasty. Gam Kahru Phool symbolise prosperity and protection which is deeply ingrained in Assamese culture.

- Muga Silk: A speciality of Assam, it is also known as the ‘golden thread’. The golden sheen and the motifs on these sarees often depict stories from local folklore and nature.
- Gamkharu: These are intricately designed traditional bracelets made of gold or silver, often worn on special occasions. Aimee Baruah wore a golden bracelet to complement her saree.
- Kopou Phul: It is an exotic and rare orchid that is an integral part of Assam’s culture.
- Gamosa: It is a handwoven cotton towel representing Assamese hospitality and is often used in cultural ceremonies.
- Riha: Worn as part of the traditional three-piece ensemble known as Mekhela Chador, the Riha is often gifted to brides as a symbol of blessings and prosperity.
Aimee Baruah has walked the Cannes red carpet for the third time and every years she takes a piece of Indian tradition with her to the film festival.
