Car crashes and flips on to Balmoral Beach in Sydney

A woman has been injured and beachgoers left stunned after a car crashed into a concrete wall and rolled onto a popular Sydney beach.

Emergency services were called to the accident on The Esplanade in Mosman about 1.15pm Monday after reports a car had rolled onto the beach.

The P-plate driver, a 33-year-old woman, appeared to have crashed into a concrete wall in a car park before rolling off an embankment onto a busy Balmoral Beach.

Both the driver and her 55-year-old male passenger were able to free themselves from the car.

The driver received minor injuries and was treated at the scene by an off-duty nurse and paramedic, police said.

“The driver was in the process of leaving a parking space on the Esplanade,” they said.

“It’s gone nose in and then when it’s gone through the brickwork there it’s tipped over.

“It’s a beautiful fine day here and obviously school holidays, lot of people around. Very fortunate that no one’s been injured”.

Police also advised the driver had been breath tested, which returned a negative result.

“My biggest fear was that there were people squashed underneath but luckily there was no one hurt,” said Angela Calabrese, who witnessed the accident.

Other witnesses recalled hearing a loud “bang”.

“Next thing I heard was this mighty bang,” Stephen King said. “A car with its tail end right up in the air and then all of a sudden tipped over onto the sand below.”

The vehicle was due to be recovered Monday afternoon.
