Car fire and over-height truck cause traffic chaos on Sydney’s Warringah Fwy and Eastern Distributor

An over-height truck stuck in a tunnel and a car on fire have closed sections of two major Sydney roads on Tuesday afternoon.

Lanes were closed on both the Warringah Fwy and the Eastern Distributor during the busy afternoon peak period, with people warned to avoid driving in the area or to allow for extra travel time.

And while both incidents were resolved before 6pm, northbound traffic out of the city remained heavy well into the evening.

About 4pm, the burning car closed two of three northbound lanes on the Warringah Fwy just before Miller St, as well as the northbound Miller St off-ramp.

It was not yet known what caused the car to catch fire but paramedics were not required to treat anyone.

Northbound traffic was heavy from Kensington to Cammeray, with anyone driving in the area urged to follow the directions of emergency services and traffic crews.

All lanes and the ramp reopened about 5.15pm.

Sydney drivers were already dealing with traffic snarls after an over-height vehicle became stuck in the Domain Tunnel about 3.15pm, closing one of three northbound lanes on the Eastern Distributor for some time.

The truck was eventually removed and the lane was reopened about 5.45pm.

However, northbound traffic remains heavy for those travelling across the bridge from the CBD in the wake of both incidents.
