“However tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment,” she said.

Details of the specific cancer have not been disclosed.

For weeks she has been the centre of online rumours and her apology in March for editing a photo taken by her husband William of her and her three children sparked further intrigue.

It was the first official photo of Kate since her abdominal surgery more than two months ago and followed weeks of speculation about her whereabouts. She hadn’t been seen publicly since Christmas Day.

On Wednesday, Britain’s data watchdog said it was looking into a report that staff at the hospital where Kate underwent her surgery had attempted to access her private health records.
