According to federal health officials, at least 16 people in four Northeastern states, including six hospitalized, have been sickened by ground beef contaminated with salmonella.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated that cases of illness have been reported in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. The outbreak has been linked to ground beef as the only common food. Individuals who recalled their meals and places of purchase mentioned consuming 80% lean ground beef bought from ShopRite stores in Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York. Currently, no recall has been issued, and an ongoing investigation is being conducted by the agency.
The actual number of affected individuals is likely higher than reported, and the outbreak may extend beyond the known states with illnesses. Many people who experience illness from salmonella poisoning recover without medical assistance and therefore do not undergo testing. Symptoms of salmonella infection include fever, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration.
