A number of welfare payments are set to be increased to provide “responsible, sustainable income support” for vulnerable Australians, according to the treasurer. In his second budget announcement, Jim Chalmers revealed a multi-billion-dollar cost-of-living package that includes raising the rate of several income support payments. JobSeeker, Austudy, and Youth Allowance recipients will receive a $40 increase per fortnight, costing the budget $4.9 billion over five years. Older Australians on JobSeeker will also receive additional support, with those aged 55 and over receiving the same base payment as those aged 60 and over, amounting to a $92.10 increase per fortnight. The budget estimates that around 1.1 million Australians will benefit from the $40 increase, while 52,000 people aged 55 to 59 will benefit from the higher payment. However, youth advocacy groups argue that the $40 increase for studying individuals is inadequate, with the National Union of Students stating that $2.80 per day is not enough to cover living costs. The government has faced pressure to increase the JobSeeker rate, with many calling for a blanket increase. The Australian Council of Social Services also believes that the rate should be lifted for all recipients. Additionally, the budget includes expanded support payments for single parents and an increase to the Commonwealth Rent Assistance program.
