Chandrayaan-3, India’s third lunar mission, has moved closer to the Moon’s surface with another successful orbit reduction maneuver. The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) tweeted that Chandrayaan-3’s orbit has been reduced to 174 km x 1437 km. The next operation is scheduled for August 14. ISRO has been conducting a series of maneuvers to gradually reduce the spacecraft’s orbit and position it over the lunar poles. Two more maneuvers will be performed on August 14 and 16 to bring the spacecraft closer to the Moon. After this, the lander is expected to make a soft landing on the Moon’s south polar region on August 23. Chandrayaan-3 is a follow-on mission to Chandrayaan-2 and aims to demonstrate safe landing and roving on the lunar surface. It consists of a lander and rover configuration and has various scientific payloads for conducting experiments on the Moon’s surface.
