Stuntman Tony McFarr, best known for his work in Guardians of the Galaxy and Jurassic World, died from an irregular heart beat due to an issue with his heart valves.

The 47-year-old’s death in May has been ruled as accidental, the cause found to be probable cardiac dysrhythmia due to mitral valve insufficiency, the Orange County Florida Medical Examiner’s Office told Deadline.

Factors that led to this were acute alcohol poisoning and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, with the autopsy detecting a history of binge-drinking.

His blood alcohol content at the time of his death was 0.29 per cent, more than four times the legal driving limit in most states of the US.

McFarr, who died at his home in Orlando, Florida on May 17, was best known for his work as a stunt double for Chris Pratt.

Pratt, who also starred in the TV sitcom Parks and Recreations, paid tribute to his former colleague.

“Devastated to hear about the loss of my friend and former stunt double Tony McFarr,” he said on Instagram following the news.

“We did several movies together. We golfed, drank whiskey, smoked cigars and spent endless hours on set.

“I’ll never forget his toughness.

“I remember he took a nasty shot to the head (in the title sequence of Guardians 2) and got several staples in his head — he came right back to work ready to go again.

“He was an absolute stud.

“He was always a gentleman and professional. He’ll be missed.

“My prayers go out to his friends and family, especially his daughter.”

McFarr began his work as a stuntman in 2010 before working with Pratt for the first time in 2015.

Their films together were Jurassic World in 2015, Passengers (2016), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018).

The 47-year-old also worked on Marvel films Captain America: Civil War, Ant-Man and the Wasp along with blockbusters The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.

In the last year, it appears McFarr became a restaurateur, opening a chain called Reel Bowls in September 2023.

He is survived by his daughter, sister and parents.
