Coffee Recall Update as FDA Sets Risk Level

Dozens of coffee products have been recalled because of the potential for a deadly toxin to be present, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned.

Wisconsin-based Snapchill LLC voluntarily recalled all of its canned coffee products in June after it was found that the company’s production processes could lead to the presence of botulinum toxin, a highly dangerous and potentially deadly bacterium.

All of the products have now been given a Class II risk classification by the FDA, which is “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

The products are sold under a range of roaster and brand names, in a variety of sizes, ranging from 7oz to 12oz. All of them have expiration dates between June 16, 2024, and April 16, 2025. In total, 549,146 cans are being recalled across all brands, and they were distributed nationwide and in Canada, according to the FDA.

“Snapchill has provided a wide range of roasters nationwide with ‘Snapchill’ cold coffee since 2019, without any known consumer cases of botulism,” a Snapchill spokesperson told Newsweek.

“However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has notified Snapchill that the low acid canned foods process for manufacturing the recalled products was not filed with FDA, as is required by regulation. There is a possibility that the current manufacturing process could lead to the growth and production of the deadly toxin, botulinum toxin, in low acid canned foods.”
