Jamie and Tim Ryan, along with their three children, were sitting on a beach in NSW in February 2021 when they had a realization. They had recently moved from Jervis Bay to Seal Rocks seeking adventure but had ended up working more than before. Looking at the ocean, they wondered if they could explore other beautiful locations in Australia and live off-grid. Jamie had always wanted to do this, but Tim was hesitant. Eventually, they decided to take the leap and pursue their dream. They sold their home, belongings, and quit their jobs. They purchased a new van and embarked on their journey in May 2021. Adjusting to their new life was challenging at first, but they learned to live with less and appreciate the simplicity. Their plan was to complete an anti-clockwise lap of Australia in 18 months, but border closures due to COVID-19 forced them to change their route. They traveled up and down the coastline of WA for a year before visiting SA and then returning to NSW. Living in a van significantly reduced their expenses, and they are now back on a budget. They use various techniques to save money, such as moving slowly through places to save on fuel and catching their own seafood. They also stay in low-cost national park camps or free camps to reduce accommodation costs. Jamie advises others to travel and have new experiences as it enriches life. Although van life has its challenges, every day is a lesson.
