However, when Swales returned from her trip to the shops, she discovered that Jordan had died. Kennedy, who was looking after Jordan at the time, has pleaded not guilty to the toddler’s manslaughter. Swales recalled Kennedy telling her not to worry about waking up Jordan and taking him with her to the shops. After finding Jordan unresponsive upon her return, Swales rushed him to the hospital but he could not be revived. An autopsy did not determine the cause of death, but high levels of an antidepressant that Kennedy had been prescribed were found in Jordan’s system. Swales met Kennedy when they both lived in the same unit block in 2004, and they began a relationship a few months later. The relationship became complicated prior to the toddler’s death due to speculation that Kennedy was seeing another woman. Recordings from covert listening devices are expected to be presented in court, including a conversation between Kennedy and Swales, where they discuss the antidepressant found in Jordan’s blood. Prosecutors aim to prove that Kennedy either administered the antidepressant to Jordan or was negligent in leaving him unattended in the bathtub while under the influence of the drug. Kennedy’s trial is expected to last around eight weeks.
