Hambantota: Sri Lankan cricketers – Kusal Perera and Avishka Fernando have tested positive for COVID on Friday and that has raised speculations over Asia Cup. Is Sri Lanka safe or has COVID hit the country. With five days left to go for the start of the Pakistan leg, Sri Lanka does not have much time as the caravan would shift there after four matches in Pakistan. Now that two top Sri Lankan cricketers have tested positive is not a good sign for the tournament.
The Asia Cup 2023 is scheduled to be held in Pakistan and Sri Lanka from 30 August to 17 September 2023. The tournament will be a 50-over ODI tournament. The 2023 Edition will feature two groups, with two teams from each group qualifying for the Super Four stage. The top two teams from the Super Four stage will then face off in the final.
The Asia Cup 2023 will commence in Multan with an opening match between Pakistan and Nepal. The tournament will feature six teams split into two groups: Group A includes Pakistan, India, and Nepal, while Group B comprises Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka. The matches will be played in a fifty-overs format, and the hosting responsibilities are divided between Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Pakistan will host four matches at two venues, and the remaining games will take place in Sri Lanka.
The Indian cricket team squad for the Asia Cup has been announced by the BCCI. There are no major surprises as all the prominent names have secured a place in the team. Rohit Sharma will continue to lead the side while Hardik Pandya has been assigned the duties of the vice-captain.
Shreyas Iyer, who has missed a large chunk of India’s matches this year owing to an injury has returned to the team. KL Rahul has also returned to the squad. Tilak Varma has also been awarded a place in the ODI squad for his consistent show in the T20Is. Sanju Samson has failed to find a place in the team but has been included as the backup player.
