Since her school days, she dreamed of being a photographer and even worked at a local establishment to save up for her first camera. Inge studied photography at Rhodes University, where she earned a BFA degree. When asked what initially drew her to photography, Inge explained that her father, who was an accountant and amateur photographer, played a significant role in fueling her interest. She often traveled with her father throughout South Africa, capturing stunning images with his 35mm Minolta camera. These experiences, coupled with regular slide shows at home, instilled in her a deep appreciation for the power of visual imagery from an early age. In school, Inge discovered that photography was the perfect blend of her favorite subjects, science and art. She decided to pursue photography as a career and began shooting for her school newspaper. Over time, Inge developed her skills in various genres of photography, including food, fashion, interiors, and decor. However, she found herself particularly drawn to the controlled lighting techniques involved in product, interior, and decor shoots. In discussing her creative process for decor shoots, Inge explained that she typically starts by creating a mood board based on the treatment or client brief. She looks for references in lighting and mood and shares the mood board with the client, often utilizing collaboration tools like Milanote. Inge may also be involved in selecting the location or studio for the shoot, which may require visiting the site and recording sun path information using the Sun Seeker app. Assembling the right team is crucial to Inge’s production process, and she values the unique contributions each team member brings. The team may consist of an art director, stylist, digital assistant, lighting assistants, and more. Throughout the planning phase, Inge ensures everyone is on the same page and aligned with the brief. Attention to the brief is a key focus throughout the entire process. In terms of equipment, Inge creates a gear list based on thorough assessment and considers various scenarios. For more technical shoots, she may conduct pre-light tests to problem-solve in advance. During the actual shoot, Inge adheres to her overall plan but also works intuitively, making minor adjustments to lighting for optimal results. She emphasizes the importance of capturing the best possible image in-camera, using lighting equipment to fine-tune rather than relying on post-processing. Inge draws inspiration from nature and the natural world, particularly how lighting affects everything. She is an avid reader, listener of podcasts, and enjoys visiting art galleries. Magic realism in films, books, and photography also inspires her. In times of feeling unmotivated and uninspired, Inge turns to physical activities like running or swimming. Being in nature and spending quality time with her family also helps reignite her creativity. Reflecting on the challenges she has faced in her career, Inge acknowledges the initial difficulties she encountered as one of the few female camera assistants in the film era. Discrimination and financial limitations posed significant obstacles, and freelancing brought its own ups and downs. Nonetheless, Inge persevered and eventually found regular work, even getting the opportunity to work in Europe. Transitioning from assisting to becoming a full-time photographer was a tough process, but Inge persisted, seeing it as a test of determination and commitment. When it comes to gear, Inge primarily uses the Canon R5 for commercial shoots, but also enjoys shooting with her Nikon F2 and Mamiya 645 cameras for personal work. She appreciates the excitement of new lighting equipment and aims to vary her gear regularly, avoiding a fixed recipe or style. Ultimately, Inge’s goal is to deliver high-quality photographs that blend technology with nature in a distinctive and captivating way.
