Crucial Indicators: Doctor Highlights Early Symptoms of Liver Cancer to Be Aware Of

Liver cancer occurs when cells grow uncontrollably in any part of the cone-shaped organ that sits in the upper right portion of your abdomen.

The potentially deadly condition is much harder to treat if it is found late so it is imperative to act on the warning signs as soon as they strike.

Worryingly, most people don’t experience signs and symptoms in the early stages of primary liver cancer but there are red flags to be aware of.

Fortunately, Dr Ayman Saleh, from Sidra Medicine Qatar Foundation, shared the first signs that can appear.

The doctor shared common signs and symptoms of liver cancer may include:

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Abdominal pain or discomfort, especially in the upper right portion
  • Swelling or enlargement of the abdomen
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • White, chalky stools
  • Dark urine.

Liver cancer usually spurs on symptoms as the cancerous tumour growths, the liver function becomes impaired or your bile ducts get obstructed.

Dr Saleh said: “Liver cancer can disrupt the normal functioning of the liver, affecting its ability to process nutrients and toxins.

“This can result in weight loss, loss of appetite, fatigue, and weakness.”

Furthermore, liver cancer can also block the bile ducts, leading to the accumulation of bile in the liver and bloodstream.

“This causes jaundice, resulting in yellowing of the skin and eyes, dark urine, and pale stools,” the doctor said.

While the symptoms described above can be caused by various health problems, it’s crucial to get them checked.

The doctor said: “If you or someone you know experiences any of the symptoms, it’s crucial to seek medical attention promptly.

“While these symptoms may not always indicate liver cancer, they could be signs of other serious conditions that require evaluation and treatment.

“Early detection and intervention can improve the chances of successful treatment and better outcomes.”

When you visit your doctor, they might conduct a physical examination, review your medical history, and recommend further tests in order to determine the cause of your symptoms.
