Danny Zayat charged with murder after Tatiana Dokhotaru found dead in Liverpool unit

A man has been charged with the murder of his former partner, months after she was found dead in a Sydney apartment.

Tatiana Dokhotaru was found dead inside her Liverpool unit on the evening of May 27, a day after she made a call to police.

The 34-year-old’s estranged husband Danny Zayat, 28, was found with her body.

On Monday, police raided a St Clair home and arrested him.

He has been charged with one count of murder and faced Penrith Local Court where he did not make an application for bail and was remanded in custody.

A court heard in July the pair were in a relationship for five years.

On May 26 this year, Zayat allegedly smashed Dokhotaru’s television, causing her to ring triple-0, but police were unable to locate where the call was coming from, the court was told.

Police allege the call ended abruptly before a phone was hurled out of the apartment, Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty said last week.

CCTV of a mobile phone being tossed from the Liverpool unit was released as part of investigations under Strike Force Median.

Police will allege in court shortly after Dokhotaru made the triple-0 call, Zayat physically assaulted her, causing her death, Doherty told reporters on Monday.

Doherty said detectives travelled to Dokhotaru’s native country of Canada to gather more information.

He said he called her mother who lives there early on Monday to tell her of the arrest.

“Her reaction was that she was very happy with that outcome and thankful for the police,” he said.

“We’re satisfied we have a strong brief of evidence against his man.”

The mobile phone remains missing and detectives are still appealing for anyone with information about it to come forward.

A separate critical incident investigation is ongoing into the police response to the incident.

Zayat is due to face court again in September.
