So how much sense to opt for a CNG car over a petrol-run car if saving fuel expenses is your primary objective? We’ll help you find the answer to that question. As of November 24, 2023, one litre of petrol is priced at Rs 96.72 in Delhi, while CNG now costs Rs 75.59 per kg in the capital.

Let’s take an example of Maruti Suzuki Fronx with an average running of 1,500 km each month. The Fronx is is available with both petrol and CNG options, with its 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine returning a claimed mileage of 21.8 km/l when had with the 5-speed manual transmission. In contrast, the Fronx CNG offers a fuel efficiency of 28.51 km/kg.
To run 1,500 km, the 1.2-litre NA petrol-powered Fronx would require about 68.8 litres of fuel, while the Fronx CNG would take about 52.6 kg of CNG. If you take the fuel price into consideration, travelling with the Maruti Suzuki Fronx petrol each month would cost you around Rs 6,654 – if the SUV was to return the exact same mileage as claimed, while the Fronx CNG would cost Rs 3,976 every month to run the same distance.
This means that in this particular situation, there’s a big difference of Rs 2,678 that one could potentially save on fuel costs if you were to switch to CNG. It should be noted that filling up CNG in your car takes longer than how long you’d have to wait to top up your car with petrol, while a CNG cylinder also takes up considerable space in your boot.
