Denise Govendir: Cold case mystery of woman murdered inside home in Sydney’s east

A $1 million reward for information is set to be announced by NSW Police over the murder of a woman in Sydney’s east more than 25 years ago.

Denise Govendir, 53, was found dead inside her Dover Heights home when police were called to reports of a home invasion in the early hours of March 10, 1998.

Police were told Govendir and a 55-year-old man, who also lived there, had been assaulted by an unknown man who broke into their home claiming to be a police officer.

The unknown man hit the 55-year-old man, knocking him unconscious, before restraining him with cable ties.

The assailant then seriously assaulted Govendir before driving away in her car, a white 1997 Ford Laser sedan.

Eleven days later, on March 21, 1998, the Ford was found in Rose Bay, about 1.7km from the Dover Heights home.

A coronial inquest found Govendir died as a result of blunt force head injury intentionally inflicted by an unknown person or people.

No one has been charged in relation to the murder, which remains under investigation by the unsolved homicide unit under Strike Force Gulak.

Police are set to announce the $1 million reward in a press conference on Friday morning.
